CFP Doomsday Edition

The clock is ticking on the College Football Season and time is almost up.

After calling the CFP Top 10 last night, which wasn’t hard. I woke up this morning thinking of Doomsday scenario that could actually happen this year. What comes to mind is the 2007 college football season.

When #1 LSU, #2 Kansas, #4 Oklahoma ,#7 Arizona State, #9 Oregon all lost the final week of the season. Then #2 West Virginia and then #1 Missouri lost in their conference Championship games.

It was just a bonkers ending to the College Football regular season. 7 top 10 teams went down and it definitely created some madness that’s for sure. Now what would happen if the same thing happened this year? Let’s take a look:

So in this scenario Bama goes down to Auburn in the Iron Bowl. Ohio State gets beat by Michigan in “The Game”.  Then Clemson somehow someway drops their rivalry game to South Carolina. If that happens Clemson and the entire ACC is probably done you would think. #7 Penn State would lose to Michigan State. #9 Colorado would drop its final game to Utah. Let’s say all else holds true that week and this is how the CFP top 4 would look before the conference championships kicked off:

  1. Michigan
  2. Washington
  3. Alabama
  4. Wisconsin

Yes Bama would still be in the top 4. Remember Michigan didn’t move after losing to Iowa, there is too much love for Alabama and rightfully so, they aren’t going anywhere. Now if all that plays out remember we are playing 2007 edition. So Michigan would play Wisconsin for the Big Ten Title, and Wisconsin wins so they are in. Washington would have to play USC for the Pac 12 ship, and if USC beats Washington again things would get really weird. You following me?

Wisconsin and Bama would be locks but who is your other final two? If Oklahoma wins their final game they will be Big 12 Champs and it will likely be the Sooners in the 3rd spot. The 4th and final spot would be tough, do you give it to a two loss Clemson who even though won their conference would have just lost to unranked South Carolina the week before or give it to a two loss Michigan team who just lost to Wisconsin. I personally think in this scenario you should put in USC at the 4th spot. Even with 3 losses, they would be the hottest team in the country and Pac 12 champs with all momentum. So if all this plays out I believe the final rankings would look like this:

  1. Alabama
  2. Wisconsin
  3. Oklahoma
  4. Clemson

Not a very fun final 4 but it is fun to think about of course. Utter chaos is not necessarily the best thing sometimes because everyone will just stay put like when 2,3, and 4 all lost a couple weeks ago. The is still a lot of football left and a lot of scenarios that can play out and honestly all the top 10 teams have a shot to get in. The only true lock is Bama, everyone is playing for the final 3 seats and we are a few weeks away from getting our answers.

I feel just like Bart Scott right now:
